Wednesday, June 23, 2010 - Laurel, Maryland:

EduSerc’s newest initiative to excite students into a career in STEM is a journey in research, technology and leadership.  Called the EduSerc Super Hero STEM Summer Training Program, elementary students learn about the importance of being an engineer, enhance their math skills, study computer technology, develop a career plan in engineering and improve on their leadership skills all by learning how to become a super hero and save the earth!

“Most people don’t realize that all super heroes were engineers, scientists or related that dedicated their lives to saving lives or the planet “, said Brian K. Smith, Executive Director and Founder of EduSerc.   “Our students are learning how leadership skills and technology development were the two main keys to all super heroes.   We are guiding student’s interests in super hero development to not only see the entertainment side of fantasy, but to funnel their imagination on why these heroes had a true love for engineering:  to use it for good reasons in the world.”  EduSerc uses the real passions of each student to fuel their storyline to learn how they can become an engineer or a super hero!

Leadership training in the program involves aspects of teamwork and identifying the leadership lessons in current episodes of Spiderman, Fantastic Four, and other programs on TV.  Students are tested every day for their English and writing abilities to develop storylines, physical fitness at 8am every morning for 1 hour to determine their hero stats, and leadership/intelligence level through repeated exercises in statistics, probability, logical thinking, geometry and word scenario problems.  This program pushes the limits for our elementary school super heroes to become the best they can be.  In the afternoon, students learn how to develop their own gadgets and technology to enhance their costume or abilities.  Students develop technology involving communications, electronics, computer programming and developing products using circuit boards.

“I loved super heroes and still do!  Peter Parker (Spiderman) was a BioChemistry major.  Bruce Wayne (Batman) was a business man and engineering technology mogul.  Tony Stark (Iron Man) was the owner of a defense contracting firm and designed military weapons for the government.   Bruce Banner (Hulk) was a Lab Scientist.  Many super heroes even had multiple science and engineering degrees that fueled their passions to be who they were”, said Smith.  “So, there are many aspects of engineering in all super heroes that we don’t even realize that give us another reason to glorify super heroes!”

This program has taken off to be a huge success for parents that have registered their child in this program.  EduSerc has we identify with a cool way to stay interested in STEM while reaching a multitude of youth through their excitement behind their own real heroes.  The organization is historically known for creating unique and innovative ways to engage students over a long period of time in various career industries.  EduSerc plans to take its concept nationwide and train more elementary students to be our future super heroes of society and continue to push their imagination to a degree in engineering in reality.

All students in the super hero program will be showcasing their abilities at a final ceremony on Friday, June 25, 2010 at EduSerc’s Conference and Training Center.  For more information, contact Yvette Smith, Community Relations at 301-498-2899 ext. 105 or visit http://www.eduserc.org
