Naima Jahmaal - Poetic Recording ArtistNaima Jahmaal

Poetic Recording Artist

Naima Jahmaal is an artist motivated by the art of change.  In a time where boundless leaps are being made in communication, she is evidence that old school concepts can meld with new school energy and be delivered with rhythm and power.

Naima's poetry represents a revolution in thought, artistry and spiritual awareness. Redefining the parameters of performance poetry, her work bounces flawlessly between prose, hip hop, jazz and soul. Her original, multifaceted stage show includes live instrumentation and turntable mixing. Naima is a new breed of the spoken word artist; one with a natural fearlessness in approaching other artistic expressions like emceeing, singing and acting.

Naima is a featured artist and writer on vocalist Tamara Wellon's second album, "Tamara In Wonderland". She also lent her voice to PSA's for the "I Dare You" campaign sponsored by Words, Beats and Life, Inc., and the Miss Black USA Pageant. In addition, she has shared the stage with (Actor/Activist) Danny Glover, (Poet) Sonia Sanchez, (Vocalist) Ayanna Gregory, and Dead Prez. In 2005, Naima was commissioned by the Kappa Phi chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to write a poem that she later presented to legendary Civil Rights Activist Dr. Dorothy I. Height. Naima has also been featured on DC Public Access television’s “The Stoop” made radio appearances on WPGC, 95.5, WHUR 96.3, WPFW 89.3, WOL1450 and had live featured performances at the “Black Love Festival,” “Black Family Reunion,” and WPGC’s “For Sister’s Only.”

During the fall of 2005, Naima headlined her first national spoken word tour along with three other dynamic poets, Patrick Washington (of the Poemcees), Jason Reynolds, ItsRealight and seasoned musician John Pollard (of the Soul Shack Band). The talented line up blazed clubs and colleges all over the United States and even opened up for the independent Hip-Hop phenomenon Dead Prez.

Naima's ventures into acting include the independent film "Spoken Truth," and theatrical productions, such as "Black Gurl," a collection of experiences captured through the lens of the African-American woman. A company member of the "Soul In Motion Players" (SIMPINC), Naima has been featured in three of their major productions, "Kakilambe," "Reflecting Africa: Celebrating the Watoto" and "We are Africa". Naima is that rare artist who is equally dynamic on page and stage.
