As the inspiration behind the movie “Freedom Writers,” Erin Gruwell has inspired a nation with her impact on youth and determination to teach students no matter what the cost. Known for teaching students deemed “unteachable,” Erin found creative ways to reach her students that excited Paramount Pictures to feature her in a movie about her story.

Roberta Flack

Recording Artist, Educator

Known for her musical impact on a generation, Roberta Flack serves as an extraordinary teacher and role model that has influenced great artist through her lifetime.

Mary Duncan

Nashville, Tennessee (Oprah Winfrey’s 4th Grade Teacher)

Mary A. Duncan is a former teacher in the Nashville Metropolitan Public School System. She retired after 27 years of teaching, most of those years in the fourth grade. She has three children, Mary (a school administrator), William (recently deceased), and David (an engineer), and she also has two grandchildren and a daughter-in-law. She is still active in the church and the Nashville community, and she puts God first in all things.
